The Ultimate Guide to Curly Hair

This summer, keep your heat-styling tools on the shelf and let your natural curls hang loose! However, we 100% understand that that’s easier said than done…It’s fairly common that our curly-haired clients never learned how to properly care for and style their hair. That’s why we at Clean Beauty Boutique are stepping up as your hairstylist bestie to show you how to control your curls so they can become your friend and no longer a foe!

Washing. Since curly hair tends to lack moisture and dries out easily, the key here is…moisture retention. Use a shampoo and conditioner specifically designed for curly hair that uses moisturizing ingredients. Next, lay off over-shampooing and try washing your hair every other day or every 3 days.  Lastly, use cold water to wash your hair, as it will help retain your hair’s moisture and strength. (Bonus tip: If your hair is more coarse, try using conditioner before and after shampooing!).

Brushing. Due to the dryness, curly hair can break easily when brushed. Try using a detangler, or brushing your hair in the shower to avoid pulling and breakage. We recommend using a wide-tooth comb or a high-quality hairbrush with natural bristles, like a boar bristle brush. Want to avoid brushing and combing altogether? Gently rake through your hair with your fingertips! (Bonus tip: If you comb your hair while conditioning in the shower, it not only detangles but helps spread the product around evenly to each strand – a win-win!).

Styling. Don’t hide your luscious locks and try wearing them naturally! If you do, however, want to pull your hair off your face, do so in a loose ponytail, braid or bun to prevent breakage. (Bonus tip: Want a break from styling altogether? Try out our Pura Luxe Treatment for smooth curls. Learn more about the treatment HERE!).
