Let’s Talk Beauty Safety

Did you know…The U.S. Federal Law regulations in the beauty industry have NOT been updated since 1938? That’s one year prior to World War II!

We don’t know about you, but A LOT has changed in the last 85 years…Why haven’t our standards? Food, toys, cars and even electric blankets have more strict safety standards. There are more rules over the chemicals we spray on crops than the chemicals we spray in our hair. Although the cosmetics industry is expected to top $716 billion by 2025 in total revenue, it is one of the least regulated industries. The average woman uses 12 products a day that total up to 168 different ingredients that lay on the skin and then go down the drain every day.

The Food, Drug and Cosmetics Act of 1938 only prohibits selling cosmetics with any “poisonous or deleterious substance,” or any “filthy, putrid, or decomposed substance.” Due to the bar being so low, it’s easier for companies to sneak claims that their products are “safe,” when they are actually harmful to our bodies and the environment. For example, many cosmetics contain phthalates — An ingredient that is linked to breast cancer, congenital disorders and mental issues. Educate yourself on more harmful ingredients that hide in conventional beauty products HERE!
